Fields Of Honor: The Pat Tillman Story by Jonathan Rand is a short story reflecting on the courageous acts of a true hero, Pat Tillman. Pat left behind money and the fame of an NFL career to enlist into the army and fight for his country in 2002. This motivation to enlist was fueled by the horrific terrorist attacks of September 11, organized by a radical group called Al Qaeda. Pat Tillman decided to serve in Afghanistan as an Army Ranger. On April 22, 2004, Pat Tillman was killed during which was originally thought to be enemy fire, was later found to be friendly fire from U.S soldiers. This book explains the lasting impact that Tillman left on the lives of so many.
This book is filled with statements from those who were close to Pat and they described the rare personality and lifestyle that Pat Tillman had his entire life. Pat was best described as a man who always made others feel important and who strived to get other to be the best version of themselves. Loving, hardworking, inspirational, and truly unique are just a few words to describe Pat. A man who never lived his life by the status quo and showed others through his actions that it’s important to be true to yourself and what you believe in.
For me, reading this book gave me a better understanding of Pat Tillman as a historic figure. This book painted an image for me of a true patriot and an inspiration for me on how to live my life. Pat showed me that doing what is right and standing up for what you believe in is a key to life. Pat knew that he needed to serve his country because he so strongly believed there was more to his life than having a superstar career in the NFL. The impact he has had on me for his courageous acts are far greater than any professional athlete could have. Pat Tillman was a man that I will continue to inspire to be like, a man who lived life right through sacrifice and heart. Pat Tillman was and always will be a hero for all.
I think this book would connect with those who enjoy sports such as football. Additionally, I feel as this book is perfect for those who enjoy the military and patriotic stories. I would strongly recommend this book for those seeking motivation and inspiration from a true hero such as Pat.
